"No collecting societies" option
The "No collecting societies" option indicates that you are not a member of any performing rights organization (PRO) or collecting society and prefer that royalties are not directed to such organizations on your behalf. This is often chosen by independent artists who manage their own rights.
When uploading your music to digital platforms or stores, you might have the option to select this parameter. However, selecting it does not guarantee that royalties won't be collected by collecting societies. The actual handling of royalties depends on the laws of each country where your music is distributed.
By selecting "No collecting societies", you might miss out on royalties you're entitled to in countries where collection isn't automatic.
Legislation in Different Countries
Russia
- Automatic Collection: the Russian Authors' Society (RAO) is authorized to collect royalties for all artists unless they have officially opted out. If you haven't formally declined RAO's services, they may collect royalties from the use of your music, even if you're not a member or haven't signed an agreement;
- Effect of the Parameter: selecting "No collecting societies" won't prevent RAO from collecting royalties on your behalf unless you've officially opted out.
United States
- Voluntary Membership: Organizations like ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC collect royalties only for their registered members. If you're not a member of any PRO, royalties for public performances may not be collected for you;
- Effect of the Parameter: Selecting this option effectively means royalties won't be collected by U.S. PROs on your behalf.
United Kingdom
- Voluntary Membership: PRS for Music collects royalties for registered songwriters, composers, and publishers;
- Effect of the Parameter: ff you're not registered with PRS, royalties for public performances and broadcasts may not be collected for you.
